Tell us about yourself and your studies.

I'm from China and my background is mainly in film and TV. I study in the Game studies programme which is a media/cultural studies programme with a focus on game.

What is your favourite thing about your study programme at Tampere University?

I like the flexibility. One can choose how to participate in courses and most of the times, instructors are very accommodating.

What kind of student activities have you participated in?

I'm a Key Master at community space OASIS. I handle the bookings and help with communications and events. One of the most iconic events at oasis is the monthly game day.
(ed. note: See Du's blog post about OASIS)

Did you develop any special skills while studying in Tampere?

I would say my perspective on skills has changed. Learning from my internship experience, it is not only something hardcore like coding can be considered skills. Trivial tasks are seem of vital importance and so are the ability to deal with them. Moderating a conversation, taking care of plants, or set up a party can been seen as skills as well. And I have improved a lot in some of them.

What tips would you give to new students who are applying to study here?

Show yourself in your personal statement. Let your character shine throughout your writing. It is helpful not only to selectors but also yourself - to find out who you are.

What do you like most about Finland?

How there is always a club for anything. Everyone I met in finland has some niche hobbies and there is a community around it. People are helpful even towards newcomers.

What do you like to do in your free time in Tampere?

I have always been a community library lover. It is astonishing what services are provided at city libraries. There are spaces for me to practice music or learn a handicraft. I borrow not only books but games, music albums, films and even musical instruments from them.

Is there anything else you would like to add?

Opportunities await indeed. Although moving to another country is scary, it is exciting and full of surprises.
