"My favorite thing about student culture here in Finland is that it you are encouraged to enjoy your life as a student"-a student ambassador story
Tell us about yourself and your studies
Hi there! I'm Anton, a former math teacher from the Philippines in search of better ways to teach. This search led me to the Teaching, Learning, and Media Education master's program here at Tampere University.
Did you develop any special skills while studying in Tampere?
I feel I've definitely upped my skills as a researcher due to the amount of research work my courses entail, but I've also gained a lot of experience in communicating with people from all walks of life (particularly from different countries) and in various contexts (as a student, colleague, tutor, etc.)
What tips would you give to new students who are applying to study here?
Read up on the program you are applying to VERY well (almost everything you need to know about it is posted online) and, once admitted, get and stay in contact with your student tutor! They will be one of the most important people you'll get to know when you first settle here in Tampere.
How do you get around the city?
I usually use the bus as it is the most accessible option from where I stay, but the tram is also a very convenient option when I'm in nearby parts of the city.
What is your favourite thing about the student culture in Finland?
My favorite thing about student culture here in Finland is probably that it you are encouraged (sometimes required, it feels. Haha!) to enjoy your life as a student alongside your studies. While you are expected to work hard and push yourself in your pursuit of scholarly knowledge and wisdom, you are also constantly reminded to look after yourself and allow yourself to grow in other ways.
Would you like to share something with us?
Coming to Finland (and Tampere in particular) to study has been one of the best decisions I've ever made in my life thus far and I know it can be for you too!
