"My favorite thing about Tampere University is the freedom to choose the courses that interest me" – a student ambassador story
Tell us about yourself and your studies.
I am from Brazil and I am in my first year in the Masters program of Teaching, Learning, and Media Education. I have a bachelor's degree in English and an undergraduate course in English methodology of teaching. I was ranked as a sergeant in the Brazilian Air Force for 13 years, where I worked primarily as an air traffic controller, aviation English instructor, and English evaluator.
What is your favourite thing about your study programme at Tampere University?
My favorite thing about Tampere University is the freedom to choose the courses that interest me and will be beneficial in my future career and goals.
Did you develop any special skills while studying in Tampere?
I believe that by studying in a multicultural group I learned how to be more respectful about other people's culture. In my master's course, there are people from Bangladesh, Pakistan, Barcelona, China, Vietnam, and so many other countries.
What tips would you give to new students who are applying to study here?
When arriving in Tampere, try to do activities outside the University environment too, to meet the locals. Go to different city events, dancing lessons, and public saunas. Don't be afraid to experiment new things and talk to the Finnish people. From what I have seen so far, Finnish people are very friendly and helpful, especially if we start the conversation by trying a few words in Finnish.
What do you like most about Finland?
I love the culture and how respectful people are towards each other's privacy, how safe the country is (especially for women).
What do you like to do in your free time in Tampere?
I go climbing at kiipeilykeskus in Nekala, I practice pole sports in Rock the Pole, and I crochet. Specially when I don't have classes, I enjoy going out to meet different cafes around the city.
