"Studying in Finland gives more free time than in other places"-a student ambassador story
Tell us about yourself and your studies
Hello everyone! I am Dilnaz Zhumabayeva, second-year student of Sustainable Urban Development Bachelor’s program in Technology stream. Originally being from Kazakhstan, I moved to Finland already a year ago, can’t believe it! I was looking for some university programs that contained Urban Design or Urban Studies, but at the same time I wanted to do something about the environment, and one day I found my program. I was so excited and now I’m still more than happy for the decision I made. My studies include interaction between technological, social, and administrative perspectives. I would have never known about the importance of social aspect in terms of creating technologies, but now it is one of my favorite aspects to consider, as it provides a bigger realistic picture.
Did you develop any special skills while studying in Tampere?
Indeed, I have developed different skills during my studies. I was lucky to notice information about AIESEC when looking at the university posters. So joining AIESEC in Tampere taught me a lot: how to plan and manage events, how to keep members engaged, how to run projects, how to manage a team, and so on. It provides me also an experience of collaborating with different partners, like local companies in Tampere are very open to collaborate with us, which means a lot to me. Being able to have some impact with a support from companies and the city of Tampere is the best opportunity I gain from moving here.
What tips would you give to new students who are applying to study here?
1. Don’t be too afraid. Some fear of unknown is normal, but don’t make the fear control your decisions. Finland as a country, and as local people, is very friendly and willing to help.
2. Talk to people that are already studying here. If you are hesitant or don’t know something, ask student ambassadors. We are here to help you.
3. If you want to experience a vivid student culture, definitely apply to study in Tampere University. You will find a community that aligns with your values.
What is your favourite thing about the student culture in Finland?
Freedom. I believe that studying in Finland gives more free time than in other places, so we are free to allocate our time on the things that develop us outside of the university. I am able to run AIESEC, participate in hackathons, assist on the conferences, spend time with friends, and so many more. I found people that have same vision and values as I do, and the university encourages that. University helps with resources to students to feel comfortable with their communities.
This is definitely a wise decision to make, as sometimes people learn even more from social interactions with other people, not only in the studying environment.
Would you like to share something with us?
I found my interest in sustainability during my studies. But it was identified through different activities, not only studies. I believe that if one is open to opportunities around them, then they are going to find the hidden gem. Something that was deep in their hearts but became unleashed after engaging in activities that put spotlight on that. I am happy that my interest is becoming more popular and Finland is one of the best places to practice sustainability with the support of others. I hope you will also find something that interests you.
