"The welcoming nature of the local people towards the international students is something I enjoy the most"-a student ambassador story
How long have you been in Tampere and what brought you here?
I've been in Tampere since August 2022 to study Safety Management and Engineering for my master's degree. In Bangladesh, I earned a bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering. I've been looking for a safety management program to pursue my master's degree since graduating. Tampere University appears to be the best place in Finland to pursue a Master's degree in Safety Management and Engineering. I'm glad I made the decision to come to Tampere.
What subject(s) do you study and what made you choose them?
I am pursuing a master's degree in Safety Management and Engineering. My favorite discipline has always been safety management, and after working in the professional field for more than three years, my interest in safety management has accelerated. I was inspired to work with management to ensure safety in the industrial workplace after witnessing several unfortunate events in Bangladesh as a result of a lack of safety management. Workplaces in Finland are known for having extensive safety management practices, and I am confident that I will be able to learn from some of the world's top safety professionals. I want to make the world a better place for everyone.
What do you like most about Tampere and Finland? What has been the most surprising or different thing about living here?
Tampere's serenity appeals to me; it has beautiful lakes, lush greenery, eye-catching architecture, a reliable transportation system, and a clean environment. The welcoming nature of the local people towards the international students is something I enjoy the most. The weather here is quite different from where I came from, which is both new and surprising to me.
What are your hobbies in Tampere? Have you tried out any new hobbies since coming here?
After arriving in Finland, I tried a sauna for the first time, and it was an amazing experience. Since then, saunas have become a regular part of my routine. Another thing I enjoy doing here is hiking. It's like a hiking enthusiast's dream come true. There are numerous hiking opportunities, and it has been a great experience thus far.
What kind of student activities have you participated in?
I've joined the "Indecs" guild. I've taken part in their programs such as the campfire event, board game evening, 'teekkari' sauna, tutor house tours, and visits to other guilds with Indecs members. I've also attended some 'Into' events. Aside from these, I've participated in university and department-organized events.
What would you say to someone who's trying to decide whether Tampere is the right place to come to study and live?
Tampere, in my opinion, is a city where one can find both peace and enjoyment. The city will never cease to amaze you. Academic and non-academic activities are always present to keep you occupied. There's no way you'll get bored here. If you're still undecided, I recommend that you come here and experience the vibe of Tampere.
What is your favourite thing about the student culture in Finland?
The best thing I have found here is the whole process of engaging international students with the renowned Finnish culture. The vibrant student culture helps even the most introverted student to take part in shared activities and experience different styles of learning through formal and non-formal processes. The balanced combination of study and fun activities is something I appreciate and feel lucky to be a part of it.
