The most common titles and eligibility criteria for our teaching and research staff

According to Finnish Universities Act, universities employ professors, teaching and research staff as well as other staff to perform other tasks. Further provisions on the qualification requirements of staff and the procedures for recruitment are specified in the university regulations. On this page, you will find the most common titles and eligibility criteria for our teaching and research staff.

The most common titles

Four-level career model for teaching and research staff

Tampere University has a four-level career system for teaching and research staff which determines the titles of staff assigned to the different levels.

The titles of Senior University Lecturer and Senior Clinical Instructor may be assigned to a staff member under the University’s academic promotion policy for teaching-focused staff. These positions are placed on Level 3 of the four-level career system. The titles of Senior University Lecturer and Senior Clinical Instructor are only awarded through academic promotion.

Other applicable job titles may be used for a justified reason. Separate qualification requirements have not been defined for other possible job titles.

General qualification requirements

For each open position, the University will select a candidate who demonstrates the highest potential to succeed in the role based on his or her qualifications, previous work experience and other factors. Persons hired by the University are expected to possess collaboration and social interaction skills necessary for their roles.

Regulations of Tampere University, Section 16.4 §

Teaching and research staff at universities are required to have proficiency in the language in which they shall provide instruction, either Finnish or Swedish. Proficiency in the language of instruction may be demonstrated in the manner determined in the university rules of procedure.

Government Decree on Universities (770/2009) 1 §: Proficiency in Finnish and Swedish required from university staff

The qualification requirements that apply to principals and teachers at Tampere Teacher Training School are set out in the Government Decree on Qualification Requirements for Teaching Staff, which are specified further in the Regulations of Tampere Teacher Training School.

Qualification requirements for different positions

Professor

Qualification requirements:

  • an applicable doctoral degree;
  • high-level scholarly or artistic expertise and an international level of achievement;
  • experience of leading scientific research or artistic activities;
  • ability to provide high-quality research-based education and instruction;
  • a record of winning external research funding;
  • a record of international scholarly or artistic activity.
     

Research Director

Candidates for the position of Research Director are expected to demonstrate a similar level of achievement as candidates for the position of Professor. When considering their merits, the University will, however, place a special emphasis on their scholarly activity and their demonstrated record of successfully leading a research group, winning external research funding and conducting research in collaboration with international partners.
 

Professor of Practice

Qualification requirements:

  • an applicable doctoral degree or an exceptionally high level of expertise in the field of the position;
  • an outstanding level of achievement in the service of the private, public or third sector, demonstrating the candidate’s ability to support the University’s teaching, research and societal impact;
  • teaching skills may be required but are not a critical requirement for appointment;
  • the position is not equal to a professorship as referred to in the Universities Act as the person’s merits may also be based on other than scientific achievements.
     

Associate Professor

Qualification requirements:

  • an applicable doctoral degree;
  • a record of independent scholarly or artistic activity;
  • teaching skills required to successfully perform the duties and functions of the position;
  • ability to lead a research group and a record of winning external research funding;
  • a record of international scholarly or artistic activity.
     

University Lecturer

Qualification requirements:

  • an applicable doctoral degree;
  • a record of independent scholarly or artistic activity;
  • ability to provide high-quality research-based education and instruction (studies in university pedagogy, 10 credits);
  • candidates applying for the teaching-focused position of University Lecturer in the field of theatre studies or architecture are expected to hold a master’s degree, artistic qualifications and good teaching skills in their field.


Clinical lnstructor

Qualification requirements:

  • an applicable doctoral degree is generally required;
  • a record of independent scholarly activity;
  • ability to provide high-quality research-based education and instruction (studies in university pedagogy, 10 credits);
  • practical knowledge of the field of the position may be required.
     

Senior Research Fellow

Qualification requirements:

  • an applicable doctoral degree;
  • a record of independent scholarly or artistic activity;
  • teaching skills required to successfully perform the duties and functions of the position;
  • ability to lead a research group and a record of winning external research funding.
     

Assistant Professor

Qualification requirements:

  • an applicable doctoral degree;
  • ability to undertake independent scholarly or artistic activity and potential to pursue scholarly or artistic activity at a high international level;
  • teaching skills required to successfully perform the duties and functions of the position.


Postdoctoral Research Fellow

Qualification requirements:

  • an applicable doctoral degree;
  • ability to pursue independent scholarly or artistic activity;
  • teaching skills required to successfully perform the duties and functions of the position.
     

Researcher

Qualification requirements:

  • an applicable master’s degree;
  • ability and motivation to conduct independent research within research projects.
     

University Instructor

Qualification requirements:

  • an applicable master’s degree;
  • good teaching skills.
     

Doctoral Researcher

Qualification requirements:

  • an applicable master’s degree;
  • eligibility to pursue a doctoral degree and generally the right to study for a doctoral degree;
  • approved study plan and research plan;
  • ability and motivation to pursue and complete a doctoral degree as demonstrated during prior studies or otherwise.
