About me

I'm associate professor in complex systems at the Faculty of Information Technology and Communication Sciences of Tampere University, where I lead the Tampere Complexity Lab and the MSc in Data Science (CSEE) program. I'm also visiting professor at the Department of Network and Data Science of Central European University (Austria), the Department of Computer Science of Aalto University (Finland), and the Center of Complexity Science of UNAM (Mexico). On the industry side, I'm CEO & co-founder at Predify (Mexico), a data science consulting company.

Responsibilities

I'm Associate Editor at Advances in Complex Systems, Associate Editor in Complex Networks and Review Editor in Complex Physical Systems at Frontiers, and member of the European Humane AI Net project.

Fields of expertise

I do research on complex systems, networks, computational social science, and data science. I also write fiction (sci-fi, fantasy, and weirder) and co-develop videogames on the side.

Mission statement

I'm interested in understanding the:

  • Generic features of stability in the dynamics of rankings and hierarchies in complex systems,
  • Dynamic interplay of mechanisms of information transfer and tie formation in social networks,
  • Adaptive coevolution of dynamics and structure in networks,

and any other phenomena related to complexity, networks, and a data- and model-driven characterization of society.

Research topics

  • Rank and hierarchy dynamics in complex systems
  • Dynamics on/off techno-social networks
  • Opinion dynamics and algorithmic bias in online platforms
