Care, as a practice, is essential to human development, relationships, and the maintenance of society. Despite being a fundamental practice, we know less about how individuals develop from care-receivers (e.g. recipients of parental/ familiar care) into caregivers (e.g., giving care to others within the present and future families), particularly within the family context. In this talk, I present findings based on a thematic analysis of focus groups investigating how parents and caregivers from different countries conceptualize and experience care within the family. Following a presentation of the findings, I discuss implications for developing curricula that provide practical caregiving skills for supporting future caregivers earlier in their development, so they can be better prepared for their future family roles.
