Also this year, Tampere University was involved in the international Shanghai ranking. The University got its best points for scientific publications.

The Shanghai Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) compares 2,500 universities each year, from which the top 1,000 are selected for the ranking.

This year, Tampere University ranked among the top 600 in the international Shanghai ranking (places 501–600).

The University got its best points for scientific publications.

There were seven universities from Finland in the ranking, and Tampere University came into the shared fifth or sixth place together with the University of Oulu. Among Finnish universities, the best performer was the University of Helsinki (101–150)

The top 100 universities are given an exact ranking, after which the universities are placed in groups of hundreds.

ARWU ranks universities by several academic and research performance indicators, including the most highly cited researchers and articles published in the Nature and Science journals. Nature and Science, which are among the most highly esteemed scientific journals publish articles especially in natural sciences and medicine.

The ranking uses the Web of Science database and its citation index to score publications.

The comparison also takes into account Nobel Prizes and Fields Medals in Mathematics awarded to both researchers and former university employees. The points awarded are proportioned to the number of researchers and teachers at the university.

The top three universities in the world are the same as last year: Harvard, Stanford and Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).

The Shanghai ranking was first published by Shanghai’s Jiao Tong University in the early 2000s. Since 2009, the rankings have been produced by the independent ShanghaiRanking Consultancy.
