The University of Tampere Foundation
The University of Tampere Foundation was established in 1973, when the University of Tampere (now Tampere University) became a state institution. According to the foundation’s charter, the foundation’s purpose is to support activities and research conducted at Tampere University in the fields of
- social sciences
- health sciences
- humanities and
- natural sciences (medicine, information research and computer science)
- and in social research, business and management studies, educational sciences and research and education in the arts
The foundation also carries out its mission by
- awarding grants and stipends for research conducted within Tampere University at the discretion of the foundation’s board;
- supporting scientific research and teaching at Tampere University by other means; and
- supporting the activities of Tampere University by other financial means.
For the purpose of managing its assets and funding different types of activities, the foundation may engage in business and investment activities that support the foundation’s mission, such as investing in housing and properties.

Donations
The foundation and its funds help private persons, organisations and companies seek new knowledge. Research that builds society can be funded through the general fund, or donors can donate to problem areas that are important to them through the named funds. Smaller donations or a fund bearing the donor’s name promote the same purpose: the pursuit of a better Finland. The minimum amount for setting up a fund in a donor’s name is EUR 100,000.
According to a decision of the Finnish Tax Administration, the donating organisation may deduct any donations of no less than EUR 850 and no more than EUR 50,000 that it makes to the Foundation between 2019 and 2023 from its revenue in taxation. This deduction can be made once a year.

Assistance for doctoral education
The University of Tampere Foundation for provides financial assistance in the fields of
- social sciences

by annually awarding grants for the dissertations of postgraduate students.
Grants for doctoral researchers’ conference travel
A doctoral researcher (mentioned disciplines) can apply for a travel grant worth €700 (€700/applicant/academic year) for attending a conference abroad where he or she has a presentation or poster or participates in a panel discussion. A free-form application must be submitted before the trip. The application must be accompanied by a letter of invitation from the conference organiser and the budget for the trip. The grant will be invoiced from the foundation after the trip by e-mail tukisaatio.tau [at] tuni.fi (tukisaatio[dot]tau[at]tuni[dot]fi.)
Stipends for master’s theses

Grants for scientific meetings
The foundation awards grants for international conferences in the fields of
- social sciences
- health sciences
- humanities and
- natural sciences (medicine, information research and computer science)
that are held at Tampere University in cooperation with one of the university’s science communities. Please attach the event programme and budget to your free-form application. The Kalle Kaihari Heart Research Fund
On 12 April 1985, distinguished businessman Kalle Kaihari donated capital for use in heart research. One stipend is granted for heart research from the fund every year. The same individual may be granted a stipend for no more than two consecutive years.
The Fund for Municipal Studies
On 1 March 1986, the Association of Finnish Cities and several Finnish cities made a donation to the foundation that was used to establish the Fund for Municipal Studies.
The fund’s interest income is used to grant stipends to students studying local governance or postgraduate students studying for their licentiate or doctoral degree at Tampere University.
The Vocational Education Fund
The Unto and Kerttu Kupiainen Fund
This fund was established in spring 1988. The fund’s capital comprises donations by private individuals in honour of the 80th birthday of Mrs Kerttu Kupiainen.
Every year, the return on the fund’s assets is used to grant one or two stipends for a master’s thesis in the field of literature, based on the faculty’s proposal.
The Alumni Association Fund
The original capital of the Alumni Association Fund was formed by the Hilja Aukimaa Fund and a donation made by Tampere University’s Alumni Association (the association’s membership fees).
The Alumni Association Fund’s assets are a separate fund of the University of Tampere Foundation.
The fund can be used for developing the alumni activities of Tampere University. Proposals on the use of the assets are made by the Alumni Association.

The School of Business Administration Fund
This fund was established on 10 May 1999 with capital donated by the Tampere Chamber of Commerce. The capital was gathered from companies and organisations based in the Pirkanmaa region. The return on the fund’s assets is used to support education and teaching of business administration at Tampere University.
The fund carries out its mission by awarding stipends and grants for education and research in business administration.
The Information Systems Research Fund of Emeritus Professor Pertti Järvinen
The capital of the Information Systems Research Fund of Emeritus Professor Pertti Järvinen, which is controlled by the Tampere University Foundation, comprises capital that was raised from private individuals and organisations in autumn 2003 in honour of the retirement of Professor Järvinen. The return on the fund’s assets is allocated to postgraduate students and researchers in the field every year.
The Teemu Tuominen International Crisis Management Fund
This fund awards grants to undergraduate students of politics (or an equivalent discipline). Stipends can, for example, be used to support a student’s studies abroad or other activities that help increase the student’s expertise with regard to international roles. In honour of the special expertise and life’s work of Teemu Tuominen, the fund seeks to support the acquisition of special expertise in the fields of international crisis management and conflict research and resolution in particular.

The Anu Kirra Fund
The foundation received a bequest from Toivo and Anna Kirra in 2011. The funds were used to establish a fund named after Anu Kirra. The return on the fund’s assets is used to support young students studying at Tampere University who have an incurable illness or disability. First priority is given to talented young people who suffer from arthritis and have limited means.
The fund is managed and represented by the Board of the Tampere University Foundation.
The Matti Naarminen Fund
In spring 2018, the foundation received a bequest from Matti Naarminen. The fund supports prostate cancer research conducted at Tampere University. A leading professor in the field works as an expert at Tampere University.

The University of Tampere Foundation declares the grants from the following donor funds open for application. The application deadline is 26 September 2023.
1. VOCATIONAL EDUCATION FUND
The fund awards grants up to the maximum total amount of €15.000 for research in the field of vocational education.
2. KALLE KAIHARI’S HEART RESEARCH FUND
The fund awards one or more grants up to the maximum total amount of €6.000 for current research in heart diseases.
3. FUND FOR MUNICIPAL STUDIES
The fund awards grants up to the maximum total amount of €6.000 to students who have been successful in their studies towards a Master’s degree in local governance or to postgraduate students who have shown talent in the field.
4. SCHOOL OF BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION FUND
The fund awards grants up to the maximum total amount of €2.000 for research in business administration at Tampere University.
5. INFORMATION SYSTEMS FUND
Emeritus Professor Pertti Järvinen’s Information Systems Fund awards grants up to the maximum total amount of €1.000 for postgraduate studies and/or research in information systems science at Tampere University. The grant may be awarded, for example, for conducting empirical fieldwork or participation in a scientific conference.
6. TEEMU TUOMINEN’S INTERNATIONAL CRISIS MANAGEMENT FUND
The fund awards one grant of €800 to an undergraduate student in political science, for example, for a field trip abroad or for an international conference.
7. ANU KIRRA FUND
The fund grants €15.000 to chronically ill or disabled students. The fund prioritises applications from talented students who suffer from arthritis and have limited means of support. Explain why you apply for this particular grant, detail the sum you apply for as well as the planned use of the grant.
8. MATTI NAARMINEN’S FUND
The fund grants €6.000 for research on prostate cancer.
