Head of Unit of Health Sciences, Professor of biostatistics

Fields of expertise

I am intested both in advanced statistical modelling in biomedical sciences (i.e., biostatistics) as well as in statistical theory. My theoretical interests in statistics focus on nonparametric methods, statistical learning including AI and the analysis of clustered and high-dimensional data with non-standard structures. I actively engage in collaborative research, particularly in the fields of nutrition, diabetes, and prostate cancer, exploring their epidemiology and health economics. I also leverage modern data sources such as health registers and loyalty card data.

Currently, I lead the Tampere University part of the LoCard study consortium (www.locard.fi), where we develop new computational methodologies to understand food purchase patterns and their impacts on people, the planet, and prosperity. Our goal is to guide these patterns towards a more sustainable future. I am also a team member in population based trials and studies on prostate cancer screening, type 1 diabetes, nutrition and cardiovascular risks.

Our projects are funded by the Research Council of Finland and Horizon Europe. I have made significant contributions to statistical theory and the application of novel methodologies in various contexts. Our works have been published in leading journals such as the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, JAMA, JASA, Statistics in Medicine, International Journal of Epidemiology, and Diabetologia. To date, I have authored over 160 peer-reviewed articles.
