This project is part of a large consortium that studies the challenges related to integrated land use, housing, transport, services and economic development in Finnish city-regions. Our subproject seeks to unravel the functioning of democracy in MALPE planning, and the related questions concerning the transparency and legitimacy of societal decision-making, and the possibilities for citizens to participate in strategic planning processes.
Background
In Finnish urban regions, integrated land use, housing, transport, services and economic development (MALPE) has become a new practice to encompass key planning sectors, in cooperation between the state and municipalities. Progressing upon this framework, the project aims at gaining analytical insight of ambiguities in political agency formation, knowledge management and policy-making in the current MALPE work. The project seeks, in a co-creative fashion, to provide solutions and policy and planning recommendations for the Finnish city regions involved in the MALPE work.
