In this project, we will isolate novel methane oxidizing bacteria from hypoxic water layers of methane-rich Finnish lakes into pure cultures and study the ability of the pure cultures to convert methane into organic chemicals. The project will also include basic characterization as well as genome sequencing of the isolated strains. Analysis of shotgun metagenomic datasets deposited in international databases is also done to study the functional potential of methane oxidizing bacteria in their natural environment.
