MET core facilities and services

BioMediTech Cellular respiration and energetic metabolism Core facility is dedicated to support users in their studies of energy metabolism. Facility users will be able to study cellular metabolic characteristics such as oxygen consumption, fermentative capacity, substrate preferences and more. Our specialist will help you with the experimental design and practical training required for your experiments. They can also, on demand, perform experiments for you.

Tampere University users and associates are allowed to use the facility (see the Prices tab) on their own, provided they received the adequate training and have agreed to acknowledge our facility services in any ensuing publication (see the Resources tab).

Assistance and training from our technical personal will be offered to researchers from the Tampere University and associates (call the contact person).

MET Core Facilities and Services

Two instruments are available for Cellular respiration and energetic metabolism.

The Hansateck Oxyterm⁺ system: It provides advanced electrode sensing system for the measurement of oxygen uptake in mitochondria, cells, organelles, or small organisms (including for example Zebrafish embryos). Users can apply a virtually unlimited number of stresses and condition changes to test their effect oxygen consumptions. Pre-established protocols are available on demand.

The Seahorse XFe24 Analyzer: It simultaneously measures mitochondrial respiration and extracellular acidification in live cells with dedicated 24-well plates fit with sensor-equipped lids. The system takes advantage of pre-established “kits”. Up to 4 different compounds can be injected in each well during the measure.

In addition, the facility can help you setting-up and using:

Biolog Phenotype MicroArrays: It is cell-based assay to investigate metabolic and chemical sensitivity of mammalian and bacterial cells, using 96 well plates pre-loaded with substrates, ions, hormones/cytokines or anti-cancer agents. Cellular sensitivity is measured as an endpoint or kinetic using a colorimetric measurements. The facility does not host the Omnilog platform.

In the future, the facility may provide services for:

Resipher high-resolution optical oxygen sensor: The Resifer system allows to measure oxygen consumption from 32 well of a normal 96-well plates simultaneously. This system uses a specific sensor-equipped lid and is installed in a cell culture incubator, allowing 24/24, 7/7 measurements.
