Characterisation of Microplastics in Sewage Sludge

Microplastics are under 5 mm in size. It has been estimated that in a municipal wastewater treatment plant over 99% of microplastics are removed from the water in the process, and large part of microplastics end up in the sewage sludge. Currently, there is now standardised methods for the characterisation of microplastics from a sludge matrix. This project develops and validates sampling and characterisation methods for microplastics from sewage sludge, and determines how selected sludge treatment processes affect microplastics.
