About one thousand cases of occupational diseases are recognized in Finland annually. In some cases occupational disease forces patients to change profession. Vocational rehabilitation may be needed to be able to continue career. Occupational diseases are compensated by statutory occupational accidents insurance.

In our research we investigate the use of vocational rehabilitation in occupational diseases. We will evaluate the effect of diagnosed occupational disease in employment and socioeconomical situation. Research will be executed by combining data from several Finnish registers. Further information will be collected by interviewing patients and professionals about vocational rehabilitation process.

Updated model for vocational rehabilitation in occupational diseases will be published based on our research findings. Ultimate target for vocational rehabilitation is to guarantee employability regardless of occupational disease.
