Novel approaches are needed for replacing fossil resources in the production of chemicals. Waste streams would serve as ideal raw materials for sustainable production, but significant challenges related to their usability still exist. In this project, a new production platform is established and studied for the conversion of organic waste to value-added products. The approach combines the advantages of using both mixed microbial communities and genetically engineered bacteria. The project addresses the current pressing issues of biotechnological processes related to process feasibility, stability, and scalability. As an outcome, the project produces concrete tools and strategies for sustainable waste-based production, and contributes to the development of carbon-neutral and resource-wise society.
