The Environmental Determinants of Type 1 Diabetes in the Young (TEDDY)

Tampere University

The TEDDY study, started in 2004, is an international birth cohort. The research is carried out in four countries: Finland, Sweden, Germany and the United States. The children studied have a genetically increased risk for type 1 diabetes. In the study, children are regularly monitored and investigated whether autoantibodies associated with diabetes are present in the blood. If the antibodies are permanently present in the blood, insulin production is monitored through glucose tolerance test. In addition, the impact of environmental factors are studied with among others questionnaires, food diaries, and stool samples.

Goal

The objective is to investigate environmental factors and their possible associations with the development of type 1 diabetes.
