INDUSTRY X

INDUSTRY X involves the understanding of how events, information, or own action influences objectives and goals immediately or in future in factory environment. The INDUSTRY X project focuses on topics such as intelligent algorithms for Industry 4.0, audio-visual environment sensing, analysis, and spatial computing, visualization and virtual asset management for digital twins, and real-time edge computing solutions for Industry 4.0.

A major task of the INDUSTRY X project is to create an "INDUSTRY X Ecosystem" in order to support and strengthen Finnish industrial companies and academia in becoming a global leader in edge computing research and technology enablers. This leadership will be realized in different fronts such as academic research, product R&D, technology development and related international standardization.

Tampere University is the academic partner of the INDUSTRY X project. Three research groups with complementary expertise take part in co-innovation activities.

Multimodal Interaction Research Group (MMIG)

The Multimodal Interaction Research Group has expertise on of multisensory information presentation (including visualization), digital twins, AR interfaces, remote operation and supervision of machinery, support for situational awareness, and interactive demonstrators. In INDUSTRY X, the group focuses on research and development of

  1. extended reality solutions for industrial use in remote maintenance, remote supervision, training and on-site maintenance
  2. multimodal presentations of context-sensitive information to support supervision and control of industrial processes, as well as design and simulation of products to be manufactured.

Human-Centered Technology (IHTE)

The Human-Centered Technology research group conducts multidisciplinary research that combines engineering and technology development with psychological, sociological and design understanding. In INDUSTRY X, the group focuses on

  1. gathering insights and building a framework of the user and customer experience of interactive industrial systems, formulated as design guidelines and methodological instructions
  2. development of tools and guidance for companies to adapt to smart industry requirements
  3. development of Human-Centered AI (HCAI) design guidelines, both as scientific and pragmatic contribution for future design of industrial systems.

Software Engineering (TASE)

The Software Engineering research group participates in the project with their expertise on industrial IoT as well as cloud and edge systems. In INDUSTRY X, the group focuses on

  1. research and development of transferable compute units for ML-based applications, e.g. acquisition and (pre-)processing of IoT sensor data and federated ML in the context
  2. understanding data platform needs and research on approaches to connect data and distributed computing, and 3) creating a model for dynamic relocation and synchronization of these units across the cloud edge continuum in industrial production applications.
