The aim of the project is to support people with a migrant background to gain eligibility for an early childhood education and care teacher (ECEC) and enter the labour market in Finland. Qualified ECEC teachers with versatile language skills and intercultural sensitivity skills have a lot to offer to the field of early childhood education in Finland that is increasingly multicultural and diverse.
JOVAP studies
Tampere University is offering eligibility and qualification studies in early childhood education for people who have earned their degree at a foreign university and need further studies to qualify for an early childhood education and care teacher and pre-primary education teacher in Finland (a maximum of 30 ECTS).
To be admitted to eligibility and qualification studies, the applicant must have Finnish National Agency for Education’s decision on the correspondence of the degree earned abroad that must be complemented with further studies.
Students participate in the University’s regular teaching, such as online courses and training periods. The studies are offered in English. It is possible to complete the pedagogical training in English, Finnish or partly Finnish speaking ECEC environment.
JOVAP 75 studies
The JOVAP75 study program is aimed at people with a degree in education who wish to obtain a professional qualification to work as an early childhood education teacher in Finland.
No student intake for the spring 2024. Possible new application time will be announced later on this page.
The student application is open 4.10.2023-1.12.2023. The studies include 60 credits of professional qualification studies in early childhood education and pre-primary education. This is complemented by two practicums in early childhood education and care settings (15 credits in total). Studies will be conducted in English. The duration of the studies is 1,5 years starting in January 2024. The courses are mainly online and can also be taken while working. However, you must note, that studies include contact teaching in Tampere and you need to make arrangements in your workplace during your studies.
Eligibility requirements
This program is open to candidates who have completed the studies required by the selection criteria.
A) A bachelor’s degree in education completed in Finland or a lower university degree obtained outside Finland, recognized by the Finnish National Agency for Education as equivalent to bachelor's degree in education.
B) A master’s degree in education completed in Finland or a higher university degree obtained outside Finland, recognized by the Finnish National Agency for Education as equivalent to a master's degree in education.
Selection procedure
To be considered for selection, candidates must have completed one of the eligibility requirements before the end of the application period. The student selection is based on the eligibility requirements and interview. Every applicant will be interviewed before acceptance. The aim of the interview is to get an idea of the applicant's motivation, suitability, trainability, and commitment to studies and to the tasks of an early childhood education teacher and pre-school teacher. Applications will be handled in the order of arrival. Students are selected on a first-come, first-served basis during the application period until the quota of 15 students is filled. The time of the interview will be agreed with the applicant. The interviews can be arranged during the application period.
The necessary annexes:
the decision of recognition of qualification from the Finnish National Agency for Education.
a copy of the diploma of the Bachelor in Education or Master’s in Education degree certificate and a copy of the transcript of records or equivalent, showing the overall grade of the education studies and the basic education studies completed.
