Multimodal Driving Laboratory
The Multimodal Driving infrastructure
The multimodal driving laboratory has a setup for simulated driving with cameras and eye trackers for recording driver behavior. It has been built for studying user interfaces for in-car information systems, but it can also be used for studying other driving-related situations safely indoors without risking participants and equipment in real on-the-road driving situations.
The laboratory contains a construction that resembles the interior of a motorized vehicle. A 180 degree screen shows the driver's view outside the vehicle. Rear-view mirrors have been constructed out of small displays and there are haptic actuators to simulate vehichle vibrations according to road conditions etc. The pedals and steering wheel have force-feedback mechanisms, seat-belt tighteners are computer controlled etc. The current setup has been built according to the needs of past research. The simulator rig is easily modifiable for different needs.
