In this project, microbial conversion of carbon dioxide rich gases to organic acids, building blocks for example for bioplastics and biodiesel, is optimized in a process called microbial electrosynthesis. This project promotes circular economy that requires novel processes to upgrade materials to higher value products. In addition, the biological process enables the sequestration of greenhouse gas, carbon dioxide. The aim of the project is to develop a high-efficiency reactor concept that enables high acetate production rates and yields by enhancing biomass growth and mass transfer. Furthermore, the process will be optimized based on the results of microbial community analyses.
