The Pori Unit of Tampere University is an education and research unit in social sciences that operates at the University Consortium of Pori and is a part of the Faculty of Social Sciences. We produce high-quality knowledge in various fields of social sciences.
Research focus and goals
Pori Unit concentrates on issues related to the well-being of individuals, communities and societies. The main perspectives are change, evaluation and development. We co-operate with local, national and international partners.
The goal of our unit is to be a versatile, comprehensive and modern research, discussion and development forum that delivers high-level multidisciplinary knowledge in social sciences. Our research projects provide complementary perspectives on issues of well-being.
Teaching is integrated into the units research activities, and students participate in project design and implementation. Our activities are characterised by open dialogue with local actors and cooperation within the University Consortium of Pori and with regional, national and international partners. Our actions are regionally significant and nationally and internationally relevant.
Impact
Well-being is a multifaceted concept that is widely and uncritically used in different contexts. Because of constant social change, definitions of well-being and understanding its structural preconditions should be produced on a case-by-case basis. It is also important to understand how people living in different spaces and situations experience their well-being.
We analyse the relationship between social change and well-being especially from social policy, sociology and social work perspectives in the following mutually overlapping dimensions:
- structures of well-being
- lived and experienced well-being
- well-being as a concept
