RAPID U

Tampere University

Project focuses on developing a novel method for rapid in-situ measurement of U-values - i.e. thermal transmittance of a structure - in existing buildings. Project is carried out in collaborative consortium composed of Finnish and German research organizations by doing both computational and experimental analyses in laboratory and field conditions. Goal is to determine technical limitations for the already-existing RAPID U -technology and to improve the RAPID U service concept for the experimental characterization of energy efficiency of buildings.

Background

Knowledge of heat losses through building envelopes in remarkable part of both Finnish and German building stock contains significant uncertainty. When succesful, RAPID U project will help owners of real estates in quality control and in design of renovations by fast and realiable non-destructive U-value measurements. Other application areas are, e.g, energy performance certificates and detection of accumulated moisture inside envelope structures.

Project is divided into separate work packages, whose topics are the experimental testing of the RAPID U device's functionality in both laboratory and field conditions, numerical evaluation of the suitability for measurement in different weather conditions and the education procedures for RAPID U measurers.
