Special Interest Group (SIG) on Hybrid Governance

Tampere University

The Special Interest Group (SIG) observes the need for understanding hybridity as a space in between governments and markets that is populated by institutional activities at different levels. The activities and the global network of the SIG are part of IRSPM (International Research Society for Public Management) organisation.

Research focus and goals

The SIG aims to contribute to understanding micro, meso and macro levels of hybrid governance and levels of government. Furthermore, the mission of SIG is to explore, both theoretically and empirically, the most important limitations, complications and paradoxes in hybrid governance, but also the strengths and important potentials of innovative forms of hybrid governance.

SIG aims at coordinating and re-organizing the fairly dispersed research on hybrid governance and organisations in the public management community. SIG contributes to the activities of IRSPM by motivating researchers to publish and discuss hybrid governance. SIG aims at providing a new, innovative platform to exchange ideas on hybrid governance.

The objectives include:

  • Cover different geographical areas of the IRSPM community
  • Link the SIG to other important communities in the area of public management and administration community
  • To facilitate joint research efforts among researchers
  • To enable publication opportunities
  • To contribute to high quality publications in relevant journals
  • To motivate young researchers in the field of hybrid governance and organisations
  1. How do we get there:
  2. Organization of SIG panels at the IRSPM Annual Conference
  3. Increasing coordination between different hybrid governance related session within IRSPM and EGPA
  4. Creation of publication opportunities for participants, such as special issues and books. For the coming years, there are plans for special issues in scientific journals and edited books with international publishers
  5. Organizing other academic workshops related to the SIG theme
  6. Possible contribution to the New Researchers panel (in IRSPM) through the organisations of a specific workshop
