Tampere Higher Education Cross-Institutional Studies
Tampere University, Tampere University of Applied Sciences (TAMK) and the Police University College of Finland have signed a partnership agreement that provides their degree students and exchange students (who are registered at attending) with the opportunity to complete courses at a partner institution and have the credits count towards their degree. Students studying for a vocational teaching degree at TAMK are also able to undertake cross-institutional study at the partner institutions.
The application form for the studies in the academic year 2024–2025 opens August 1st. Please be aware that the right to study granted under the cross-institutional agreement will only entitle you to complete the courses and units that you specifically select in the cross-institutional study service. The cross-institutional right to study will remain valid for one academic year at a time. However, summer courses offered before the start of the next academic year can be completed until 31 August annually. If you have not completed your selected courses by this deadline, you must reapply for the cross-institutional right to study for the next academic year if you are still looking to complete them.
Before you apply for cross-institutional study, please consult the guidelines provided by your faculty or school to make sure the credits can be counted towards your degree. Then you can file an application through the cross-institutional study service. You can apply for cross-institutional study until the end of May. If you have been previously admitted as a cross-institutional student and are looking to complete more courses under the scheme, please log in to the service and select more courses.
Please note! You do not need to apply for admission through the cross-institutional study service if:
- you are looking to complete courses offered by your home institution, or
- the right to study granted to you by your home institution entails the right to take courses at a partner institution.

How to apply
Cross Institutional studies between TAMK, Tampere University and the Police University College are offered in the Tampere Higher Education Cross-Institutional Study Service. Check out the cross-institutional courses offered, and plan your studies. You can log in to the service with your TAMK credentials.
Exchange students: You should check beforehand that studies taken in Tampere University or the Police University College will be approved by your home university. Tampere University is Erasmus eligible. The maximum amount of cross-institutional studies is limited to 40% of the exchange studies per semester, and to 10-12 credits for degree students per semester.
Check the suitability of a cross-institutional course for your degree at your home institution before applying for cross-institutional studies!
Also note that courses may be offered several times during an academic term. It is possible that not all implementation rounds are available for cross-institutional students. Furthermore, not all courses are necessarily arranged every year.
Apply in the Tampere Higher Education Cross-Institutional Study Service for your right to study cross-institutional courses. The right to study must be applied for in good time. If the right to study is granted, you must additionally enrol for each course according to the schedules of each course implementation.
For the implementation schedules and other information on the Tampere University courses, see the Tampere University Student's guide.
Enrolling for studies and notification of approved enrollment
Tampere University courses
Once a TAMK student has applied and has been approved to attend a Tampere University course, the student will receive instructions on how to enroll for the course. Please note that the right to take course(s) will only be confirmed in case the student's application gets approved.
The student should enroll for a Tampere University course in the information system Sisu. You can find more information about enrolling to Tampere University courses in the Tampere University Student's guide. See below, how to do a personal study plan in Sisu.
At the cross-institutional study service you will mainly find courses that all the TAMK students can apply for. However, if the amount of students must be limited, degree students of the Tampere University will be given preference. Otherwise students for the course are selected according to the priority principles applied at each faculty.
Note! Before certain language studies, a mandatory proficiency test must be completed. These studies can be found on the elective studies page in Intra (first select Tampere University at the top, then in the list Humanistic Sciences). Information about the proficiency tests is available in the curriculum.
Police University College courses
To apply, TAMK students go to the Tampere Higher Education Cross-Institutional Study Service, pick their desired courses in their study basket, and confirm their application for the right to study. The application deadline is included in the course details.
Please be aware that submitting an application and being accepted as a cross-institutional student does not automatically guarantee admission to the course applied, because the number of places may be limited. Priority will be given to the Police University College's own degree students and exchange students. However, there is always a quota reserved for cross-institutional students in the courses that are made available under the cross-institutional scheme.
Students will be notified of their course admission by email. At the same time, approved cross-institutional students will receive their guest access to the Moodle environment of the Police University College, and also instructions how to sign into Moodle.
If a TAMK student enrols for a cross-institutional course but decides not to attend, they should immediately cancel the enrolment to free up the place for others.
Course completion
Tampere University courses
If a TAMK student's enrollment is approved, they can complete their cross-institutional courses according to the instructions provided by the teacher. If you as a student do not intend to complete the course despite your enrollment, notify immediately the responsible teacher. The students must follow up their TAMK email. In case you as a student do now read your TAMK email, you must forward your TAMK incoming mail to another account you read on a daily basis. Email is a compulsory channel to follow for any important information on the course completion.
The right to study granted through the cross-institutional study service only entitles the student to take courses they have applied for in the service. The study right is granted for one academic year at a time. However, the student has time until 31st of August to complete the studies organised in the summer. If you as a student do not complete the studies before the above mentioned time, but you still wish to carry them through, you must reapply for the right to study for the following academic year.
After the student's study rights are approved, they can use the intranet's study-related widgets. The widgets gather information from the Tampere University study systems and the EXAM system. The widgets are available to TAMK students during their right to study.
Police University College of Finland
After you as a student are admitted to a course, you can complete the course according to the instructions provided by the host institution Police University College ("Polamk").
At Polamk, students are expected to provide feedback on the courses they attend. The feedback is collected and processed by the teacher in charge of the course. Student feedback is used to develop courses.
The teacher will assess the completed coursework and enter the grade in Polamk’s academic record. The credits will be transferred to the Students’ Pakki system at TAMK.
After course completion
Once you as a student have completed studies at the Tampere University or the Police University College, the study attainment records will be automatically transferred to TAMK. Check your Pakki system at TAMK to make sure that the study attainments from the cross-institutional studies have been registered. After this, you should also ensure that the credits are counted into your degree.
