Permission to publish and publicly defend the dissertation
Permission to publish and publicly defend the dissertation
The Faculty Council grants permission to publish and publicly defend the dissertation unless it has delegated this task to the Dean.
The pre-examiners provide statements on whether the manuscript has such scientific or artistic value that the Faculty Council can grant permission to publish it as a dissertation.
The pre-examiner issues his/her statement by using the following options:
The pre-examiner
- proposes the right to publish and publicly defend the dissertation
- does not propose the right to publish and publicly defend the dissertation.
The pre-examiners may recommend minor amendments, which the doctoral candidate may take into consideration. The pre-examiners may also suggest minor technical revisions to the manuscript. If both examiners propose granting permission to publish and publicly defend the dissertation, the Faculty Council decides about the permission.
The faculty delivers the pre-examination statements to you, the responsible supervisor and the head of the doctoral degree programme before making a decision on the permission to publish and the public examination. You have the opportunity to make a rejoinder on the pre-examination statements if you are unsatisfied with them. You can only edit the manuscript in ways proposed by the pre-examiners.
The responsible supervisor is charged with ensuring that you take sufficiently into account the corrections proposed by the pre-examiners. Deliver the amended version of your manuscript, the possible rejoinder on the pre-examination statement and other required documents to the faculty according to the instructions provided by your faculty or doctoral programme.
Faculties / doctoral programmes issue further instructions on the permission to publish and publicly defend the dissertation.
In cases where the dissertation is printed for the public examination, reserve enough time between receiving the permission to publish and the public defence. According to the instructions issued by the Library, the dissertation manuscript should be sent to the printers about five weeks prior to the public examination.
Dissertations must be available for public viewing at least ten days before the public defence.
