Mobility and internationalisation in doctoral studies

Research is international by nature. The emergence of new research topics, technologies, networks and results is crucially influenced by the mobility and internationalisation of researchers, which forms an integral part of the research career starting from the doctoral programme phase. The University encourages researchers to engage in international mobility, carry out research and establish contacts with foreign universities and research institutes in their field. It is also possible to include internationally completed studies and research periods in the doctoral degree. Mobility also improves the career opportunities of researchers and develops their skills.

Tampere University participates in various exchange programmes and networks through which you may seek and exchange period in different parts of the world. All the student exchange destinations are listed on the Mobility-Online portal.

Exchange students from Tampere University are always exempted from paying the tuition fees of the host university and are eligible for financial support.

Please note that grants are not available for doctoral students holding a salaried position (even part time) due to reasons of taxation.

At the moment there are no travel grants available for self-organised research visits abroad. Doctoral students can apply for Erasmus+ grants, grants for long-term mobility periods at partner universities of Tampere University and short-term travel grants. Industrial Research Fund at Tampere University of Technology and The University of Tampere Foundation awards grants also for conference travel.

Erasmus+ (EU and EEA countries, Macedonia, Serbia and Turkey)

The Erasmus+ programme is an EU programme to support education, training, youth and sport in Europe. The programme supports higher education institutions’ European cooperation and mobility. For students, the Erasmus+ programme offers the opportunity to participate in student exchange at a foreign university and to undertake a traineeship in a company or organisation in the participating country. 

You can participate Erasmus+ mobility periods (student exchange and traineeship) totalling up to 12 months maximum per each cycle of study (bachelor/ master/ doctoral). Please see more information on grants and applying here.

Erasmus+ grants for traineeships 

You may apply for an Erasmus+ grant if you have a traineeship place in a country that is a member of the Erasmus+ programme (Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Croatia, Cyprus, Denmark, Estonia, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Macedonia, Malta, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Turkey and United Kingdom).

The amount of the Erasmus+ traineeship grant depends on the duration of the traineeship and the destination country. The minimum duration of the training is two full calendar months. Working should be full-time, at least 30 hours a week. You will also need to earn credits from your traineeship to be eligible for an Erasmus+ grant. Make arrangements with the education specialist at your faculty to include the traineeship in your degree.

Please note that if you are a doctoral student with a salaried position (TAU staff member) at the University you are not entitled to the Erasmus+ traineeship grant due to reasons of taxation. Short-term study option abroad 

We offer students to have the opportunity to seek international experience by completing a short-term summer or winter school abroad. Intensive courses allow you to expand your knowledge of your field while developing your language skills. Course fees usually apply to intensive courses.
