Monitoring the academic progress - guide for students

At Tampere University, academic progress monitoring is an established component of our student guidance and counselling services. We track academic progress to identify students who may be struggling to maintain steady progress towards their degree or may be experiencing stress or burnout or facing other challenges that affect their coursework. We reach out to these students via email to check on their well-being. We select the students we contact based on their credit accumulation or unfinished courses. Both the Faculty guidance services and Joint guidance and counselling services are involved in monitoring students’ progress towards degree completion. This monitoring occurs annually during the spring semester.

  1. 1

    Emails will be sent

Students who are not making timely progress towards their degree will receive an email in January or February. This email will be sent to their tuni.fi email address with the subject line “Progress of your studies: How are you?”

  2. 2

Please respond to the email sent

You can either select some of the available response options or write a response in your own words. Please respond to the email even if you do not need additional support.

  3. 3

    Reminder

If we do not hear back from you, we will send you a reminder in two weeks.

  4. 4

We are responding to your email

We will respond to all emails as soon as possible. Due to the high volume of emails, please be patient while waiting for our response. We read and respond to all emails.

  5. 5

    You will receive our response

Depending on your specific circumstances, our response may include answers to your questions, instructions, or suggested support services that could be useful to you. It is always up to you to decide what kind of support you would like to receive.

Remember that you can contact our student guidance and counselling services whenever you need support or guidance during your studies. You do not have to wait for our inquiry about your academic progress. We encourage you to reach out to our guidance and counselling services at any time if you have difficulties with maintaining your progress. For more information about our guidance and counselling services, including contact details, please see: Guidance and counselling services and contact information.

Why do we monitor students’ progress?

We monitor students’ academic progress not to probe into their credit accumulation or academic record, but to offer additional support to those who need it and help them get back on track. A further goal is to increase students’ awareness of the various services available to support their studies and well-being. When we reach out to students who are not making timely progress, we can advise them to contact, for example, the student advisor/education specialist of their degree programme or book an appointment with a guidance counsellor.
