Tampere University Student's Handbook

Intranet start page for students

The intranet start page brings together for university students important news, study schedules, notifications from background systems, and events hosted by Tampere Universities. The start page also offers you easy access to other systems, such as the student information system Sisu, EXAM, Moodle and the services of the University Library.

The functionalities available on the start page are grouped into widgets. You can rearrange the widgets on the start page or hide some of them. Click Edit start page on the top right corner of the intranet start page to adjust the widget settings.

The widgets that display information about your own studies retrieve their data from Sisu and EXAM. The information that appears in these widgets is automatically refreshed every 15 minutes.

News

The News for you widget displays targeted news based on your institution (Tampere University/TAMK) and user role. Use the filters to narrow down the news displayed on screen. Click All news to view news that are primarily intended for other target groups. To expand the news stream shown on your start page, go to your intranet profile to adjust your news settings. You can access your profile by clicking your name on the top right corner.

The Main news widget displays the main news that are targeted to you based on your institution and user role (Tampere University/TAMK; staff/student).

Calendar

The intranet offers students two calendar views: The Schedule widget displays your schedule for the day, but you can access a broader calendar view (My calendar) by clicking the calendar icon either at the bottom of the widget or in the main navigation menu.

The calendar displays the learning events for which you have enrolled in Sisu and been admitted as well as the exams for which you have enrolled in the EXAM system. Changes of the times and places of your learning events will be updated to the calendar. The Intranet calendar is  your ‘timetable’ gathering the learning events you plan to attend. You can also add your own entries to the calendar. In the calendar, learning events have a white background and your own entries a violet background.

You can add a reminder to the Reminders widget when you are creating a calendar entry or later on.

You can also add a reminder of a news article or an event (which appears in the Events widget) to your calendar by selecting Add to My calendar / Reminders.

There is a calendar in Sisu as well. Read more about Sisu's Study calendar.

Hiding and unhiding a learning event or course

You cannot delete the learning events displayed in your calendar, but you can hide all the course events or individual learning events.

Hiding events:

  1. Click a learning event in My calendar.
  2. Click the eye icon on the top corner to find the options available.
  3. Select Hide this event to hide the selected event in your calendar or Hide the whole course to hide the entire course.

You can also go to your calendar settings (My calendar > gear icon) to hide a course: go to the section Courses in calendar and unselect the checkbox next to the course that you want to hide.

Unhiding a learning event or course:

  1. Go to your calendar settings (My calendar > gear icon) and the section Courses in calendar.
  2. Select the checkbox to unhide a course.
  3. Individual learning events are listed under Hidden calendar events. To show a hidden event, select one or multiple events and click Unhide.
  4. Your selections will be automatically saved.

Calendar settings

To adjust your calendar settings, click the gear icon in My calendar.

You can hide and unhide courses and individual learning events (see the instructions in the section Hiding and unhiding a learning event or course on this page), subscribe to an iCalendar feed, or edit the default calendar view.

The Calendar feed function enables you to subscribe to an iCalendar feed to sync your calendar to your preferred external calendar app. You can only subscribe to a single feed, but you can create a new feed at any time.

You can select your preferred calendar view under Default calendar view.

Upcoming exams

The Upcoming exams widget displays all your upcoming exams, including those for which you have not yet enrolled.

Clicking Search all exams will take you to the exam search in the Student’s Guide. By default, the search will return all exams that will take place in the current academic year. You can filter the search results, for example, by exam date, degree programme or exam type.

Click the link Enrol in Sisu via Study Plan to access your personal study plan and enrol for the selected exam.

The Confirmed enrolments view displays the exams for which you have enrolled and been admitted in Sisu as well as the exams for which you have enrolled via the EXAM system (see more instructions for using TUNI EXAM).

Please be aware that all exams are not displayed in this widget or returned by the exam search in the Student’s Guide. For example, exams that are taken while a course is in progress (such as so-called lecture exams) and exams for which you enrolled, eg through Moodle are not included.

Recent notifications, My courses, Recent credits

The Recent notifications widget displays the messages and notifications sent via Sisu (which are less than three months old). These include messages sent by teachers, comments provided on your personal study plan and changes made to the teaching timetable and venues (such as the time and place of lectures). Click on the heading to access the full message or notification in Sisu. To see all the messages and notifications, click All notifications, and you will be taken to Sisu.

The My courses widget displays the courses for which you have enrolled and been admitted but have not yet completed. The course name acts as a link that takes you to the course page in Sisu.

The Recent credits widget displays ten of your most recent course completions. To see all the courses you have completed, click All credits, and you will be taken to Sisu.

Students’ tools, Events, Reminders

The Students’ tool widget lists links to the most frequently used information systems. Click Shortcuts on the top right corner of the intranet to find links to other electronic services provided by Tampere Universities.

The Events widget displays targeted news based on your institution (Tampere University/TAMK) and user role. Use the filters to narrow down the events displayed on screen. Click All events to view events that are primarily intended for other target groups.

You can add your own reminders to the Reminders widget. The reminders you add in the other intranet widgets will appear in the Reminders widget. You can also add reminders to your calendar.
