Teacher's pedagogical studies, University pedagogy, 60 cr

Tampere University
Description

The pedagogical studies include educational studies and guided teaching practice. The studies support the development of the participant’s human, learning and knowledge perceptions, as well as interaction skills. During the studies, the participant develops their pedagogical thinking and builds their teacher identity. The studies emphasize a research approach. The studies deepen the understanding of the individual, communal, and societal dimensions of teaching work.

During the studies, the participants investigate and solve together challenges related to teaching, studying, and academic work, and build an interdisciplinary collegial teacher network. The starting points of the studies are developing pedagogical expertise and strengthening agency in academic work. Pedagogical expertise is seen both as an individual identity process and as community expertise. The studies progress from the course level towards research-based community development. The pedagogical starting points and teaching environments are examined in a multidisciplinary, research-based critical way. The participant has opportunities to understand the field of higher education broadly and to examine teaching work, study processes, and student orientations as interacting elements.

The studies take into account pedagogical perspectives common to all disciplines and degree programmes, as well as discipline-specific special issues.

Teaching practice is integrated into study modules. In the intermediate studies, part of the teaching practice is carried out outside one’s own university. Practice can also be completed as part of international exchange programs.

Objectives

The broader goal of university pedagogy studies is to help the participant strengthen their own academic agency and pedagogical expertise at the individual and community level.

The goal is that the participant:

  • is able to support the study and personal growth of individuals and communities in an ethically sustainable way

  • is able to examine and evaluate the consequentiality of their pedagogical practice

  • is able to support and promote agency, participation, and equality in the academic community

  • is able to develop their work and pedagogical thinking research-based

  • gets the readiness to work in the official development positions in pedagogical communities
