KEB-22006 Biological Processes in Environmental Engineering, 3 cr
Implementation KEB-22006 2019-01
Description
This is an introductory course to biological wastewater treatment. The course is divided into two sections: I- covers basic principles, design, and operation of aerobic and anaerobic treatment processes including pretreatments, nitrification, denitrification, phosphorus removal, hydrolysis, fermentation, acidogenesis, methanogenesis, biogas production, mass balance, process kinetics, and reactor/digestor configuration. II- covers xenobiotics in biological wastewater treatment plants and landfill leachate treatment. There are also three exercise sessions where we apply the theories and principles from the lectures to simulated cases.

Additional information of course implementation
This course has two full exams and two half-exams. The half-exams are optional, but will give you an additional chance to complete the course successfully. Half-exam 1 covers the first half of the course material and half-exam 2 covers the second half of the course material. Each accounts for 50% of the final grade. The full exams cover all the course material and accounts (+ exercises) for 100% of the final grade. Please note that half-exam 2 is given at the same time as the first full exam. You can take either or, but not both, your choice. All the exams are given electronically, which is more flexible than written (paper) exams and allows the students freedom of choice to when to sit for the exam within a given set of dates.
There are three exercise sessions where we apply the theories and principles from the lectures to simulated cases. The exercises account for 5-10% of the course final grade. Please check Other Events to see the date and time for the exercises.
