Learning Outcomes
After completing the course, the students will have a good knowledge of the fundamentals and applications of biocatalysis and enzymology. The course will cover the biochemical/chemical principles of biocatalysis, including background information related to different aspects of biocatalysis, enzyme kinetics (including reaction mechanisms, inhibition, energetics, etc.), non-protein groups (mainly coenzymes), enzymes immobilization, enzyme catalysis in unconventional media, and industrial applications. The course will also briefly introduce some advanced techniques in biocatalysis such as catalytic antibodies, nucleic acids as catalysts, antibiotics (focusing on non-ribosomal peptide), and ways of improving the performance of biocatalysts (evolutionary methods, pathway engineering).

Instructions for students on how to achieve the learning outcomes
Students' understanding of the course material is evaluated based on exams. The course also offers optional external Bonus work, usually a short assay. There are two half-exams (at middle and end of the course) as well as 3 final exams at the end of the course and during the next periods. Students can choose which exams they want to take. All exams are Electronic. To pass the course with a grade of 1, the student will have to score at least 50 % of the maximum points in the exam. A good understanding of the core content will earn the student a grade of 3. In order to earn a grade of 4 or 5, the student will have to have a good or excellent understanding of the complementary knowledge.
Assessment scale:
Numerical evaluation scale (0-5)
Additional information about prerequisites
Knowledge of basic biochemistry or microbiology or thermodynamics is recommended
