Learning Outcomes

After completing the course, a student understands the importance of resource recovery in circular economy (emphasis on environmental technology). The student can list different compounds that can be recovered and in which municipal and industrial side streams they are present. The student can also define the characteristics of these side streams. The student can name different physical, chemical and biological technologies that can be used to recover different compounds and can describe in detail the fundamentals and implementation at least one of these technologies. After completing the course, the student can describe both current and future technologies used for resource recovery and evaluate the suitability of these technologies for defined side streams.

Content

Content Core content Complementary knowledge Specialist knowledge
1. Importance of resource recovery and how it is connected to circular economy
2. Compounds that can and are worth recovering (now or in the future) from different side streams  Characteristics of the compounds
3. Municipal and industrial side streams that contain recoverable compounds  Characteristics of the side streams  Actions that enable the recovery of the compounds from the side streams
4. Physical, chemical and biological technologies and their combinations that can be used for the resource recovery  Fundamentals of these technologies  Design of the technological implementation

Instructions for students on how to achieve the learning outcomes

The grade will be determined based on exercises (50%) and a project work (50%). To pass the course with a grade 1, the student will have to score at least 50% of the maximum points. A good understanding the core content will suffice to a grade 3. In order to achieve grade 4 or 5 the student will have to have a good or excellent understanding of complementary and specialist knowledge, respectively.
