Implementation BMT-73107 2019-01

Description

Course objectives: On successful completion of this course, participants should be able to:
1. Describe the basic terminology used in biomaterials and more specifically used when speaking of bioceramics.
2. Analyze and understand the fundamentals of research in bioceramics.
3. Describe the various bioceramics used as implants, in terms of application, properties and method of manufacturing
4. Understand the process in which the body reacts with the various ceramic implants.
5. Prepare through independent study of textbooks, readings, and journal papers the presentation of an independent (or in group) research project

Additional information of course implementation

Course synopsis: This course will consist of a series of 2h classes. Each class will address one topic related to the advancing field of bioceramics and their applications and will highlight interdisciplinary interactions between clinical sciences, bioengineering and engineering.

Grading: Final course grade will be based upon final exam (75%) and Student Project progress report and presentation (25%). In the projects, one review article will be given to a each group (group of 2-3 students). The students will prepare a short report and a presentation on the topic. Both the report should discuss the state of the art and future of the bioceramics or manufacturing method described in the review article. The students will have to find more literature to support their statement. All students are expected to be active and to ask questions after the presentations. The presentation will be 15 minutes (+5-10 minutes for questions).
