Learning Outcomes
The learning outcomes consist of electronic structure theory and its applications to atoms, molecules and nanostructures. Based on these, theory and methods for numerical approaches to consider these many-body systems are presented and demonstrated with relevant computer software.
Instructions for students on how to achieve the learning outcomes
The contents include recap of some quantum mechanics, angular momentum algebra, some group theory, techniques of approximation and spectroscopy, details of the structures of atoms, molecules and nanostructures. The basic concepts are those of quantum mechanics and quantum dynamics (quantisation), those of symmetry related in group theory (quantum numbers), variation theory, excited states and transitions (selection rules), exchange and correlation interactions, and the methodological approaches Hartree¿Fock and Density functional theory with many practical issues like basis sets.
