Learning Outcomes

The will have basic knowledge on thermodynamics and kinetic factors controlling phase transformations in metals and alloys. Can decribe diffusional and diffusionless solid state phase transformations. Understand the metallurgical transformations occuring in metals due to different heat treatments. Can describe what happens in the structure and properties of ferritic alloys in quenching and tempering process. Has knowledge on laboratory practices from CALPHAD simulation to microstructural analysis and is able to report and present his own laboratory work.

Content

Content Core content Complementary knowledge Specialist knowledge
1. Thermodynamics and kinetics of phase transformations. Diffusional phase transformations. Precipitation: mechanisms of nucleation and nucleus growth. Diffusionless phase transfomations: massive and martensitic transformations. Bainitic transformation  Diffusion: mechanisms and influencing factors.  Utilization of phase transformations in the development of novel materials
2. Classicall heat treatments and their effect on structure and properties  Utilization of equilibrium diagrams, Time-Temperature-Transformation and continuous cooling diagrams in the design of heat treatments
3. Solidification, principles of nucleation and nucleus growth.
