Learning Outcomes

After finishing the course, the student knows the most important thermoplastic, thermosetting and natural polymers and their applications. The student understands the relationship between the molecular structure and properties of polymeric materials. The student knows how the properties of the polymeric materials can be measured and modified. The competence of the student is evaluated by a group work, report and exams. On the course the student learns to gather, process, evaluate, analyse and use information in a versatile, critical and ethical way. Since the course contains a group work the student learns to work in communication and interaction situations in working life as required by the task as a member of the project group. The student will also be able to communicate and work with people from different cultures and master the language skills required in his/her field.

Content

Content Core content Complementary knowledge Specialist knowledge
1. Structures, properties and applications of polymeric materials  Special polymeric materials, like magnetic, electrically conductive or smart polymers
2. The ways to modify the properties of polymeric materials (copolymerization, blending and additives)
3. Testing and analysis methods of polymeric materials
4. Recycling and re-use

Instructions for students on how to achieve the learning outcomes

The course grade forms mainly from the grade of the final exam or midterm exams. The student also needs to prepare and present a presentation as a member of a group, to do a digital exam about the presentation topics and to make a report about the laboratory demonstration. The student is able to earn extra points for the course by getting higher than the minimum points from the electronic exam (12 out of 24) and getting a good grade from the report. The extra points can raise the course grade by one.
