Description

The Innovative Strategies in Architectural Design is a research and design course, that links theory and site research to an architectural intervention. In the fast changing world, it is essential to learn how to search information and to become acquainted with some of the ongoing trends and their effects on the physical environment. Moreover, it is crucial to understand the relation between the person (the user) and the built environment. Nevertheless, essentially every architect should find one's own "niche", field of interest to deepen one¿s knowledge. Hence, this course focuses both on research and design, offering both practical and theoretical viewpoints for inspiration and information. The course aims to provide students who are preparing for their thesis with a theoretical base regarding Architectural Design, and challenges them to take a position within this discussion by means of analysis, design and critical writing.

Firstly, students will work in small groups and get acquainted with research methods for site analysis, they will engage in critical discussion about theory and they will investigate contemporary programs. Based on the conducted site research, the strategic brief, and theoretical investigations, students design their individual area plans. They will continue on defining a concept and preliminary functional brief for experimental design. They will formulate their own individual approach for an architectural design based on the strategic briefing and area plan.

The course is the first of the two advanced courses in Architectural Design followed by the course ARK-05227 Experimental Architectural Design. We highly recommend to take both of the courses in the same academic semester.

Requirements

Part of the course is to participate in all the joint educational events and other sessions, together with the mid-term and final critics. To complete the course, student must submit approved final group work and individual design projects on time.

Assessment criteria: Work in progress and final outcomes are assessed through interim and final evaluations. Special emphasis is given to the evolution of the research and design processes. Active participation in group work, tutorials and reviews is required. The entirety of the approach is more important than the perfection of details.

Additional information of course implementation

When a course is over-subscribed, i.e. there are more sign-ups than places on the course, we enroll the required number of students according to the following criteria and order:
1) students that are enrolled in the Bachelor/Master/Doctor of Science in Architecture degree programs
2) exchange students that are enrolled in the exchange program in Architecture and if needed the priority is given to students that signed up first
3) students that are enrolled in the degree programs other than Architecture and if needed prior- ity is given to students for whom the course is compulsory and then if needed the priority is given to students that signed up first
4) other students and if needed the priority is given to students that signed up first
Students on the sign-up / waiting list have to be present on the first day of the course to be sure of retaining their place.
