Experimental Architectural Design

Implementation ARK-05227 2019-01

Description

Experimental Architectural Design is a research and design course that focuses on the development of a detailed hybrid architectural project that might become the basis for a Masters Thesis for further development. The course primarily consists of a design task, in which students are expected to individually develop, argue and present a design project in accordance to a specific design task that includes a hybrid of architectural programme and scales, such as housing and public functions and associated spaces between buildings and urban connections, in detail. The design project follows on from a strategic and wider design approach and theoretical concepts developed in the pre-requisite course `Innovative Strategies in Architectural Design'. All learning activities on the course support the completion of the course assignments, in addition to which the students are expected to conduct their own independent learning. Experimental, imaginative and contextual as well as conceptual detailed approaches towards the hybrid building design task are expected. The design proposal should be sufficiently justified and both realistic and of high spatial and architectural (artistic) quality.

The course is the second of the two advanced courses in Architectural Design following the course ARK-05226 Innovative Strategies. We highly recommend to take both of the courses in the same academic semester.

Additional information of course implementation

When a course is over-subscribed, i.e. there are more sign-ups than places on the course, we enroll
the required number of students according to the following criteria and order:
1) students that are enrolled in the Bachelor/Master/Doctor of Science in Architecture degree programs
2) exchange students that are enrolled in the exchange program in Architecture and if needed the priority is given to students that signed up first
3) students that are enrolled in the degree programs other than Architecture and if needed priority is given to students for whom the course is compulsory and then if needed the priority is given to students that signed up first
4) other students and if needed the priority is given to students that signed up first
Students on the sign-up / waiting list have to be present on the first day of the course to be sure of retaining their place.
