At least 4 out of 5 exercises that consist of a preliminary task, a guided laboratory session and a post-lab task must be completed in addition to a practical assignment that tests the skills learned during the course.

Learning Outcomes

Student becomes familiar with the equipment of a typical wired local area network. After the course, student knows how to do simple Ethernet and IP-level configurations, can do basic performance measurements, and is able to utilize a protocol analyzer to explore and debug the operation of protocols used commonly in today's Internet.

Content

Content Core content Complementary knowledge Specialist knowledge
1. Configuration of simple networking features on computers running the Linux operating system.  Configuration of simple networks using Cisco networking devices (switches and routers).
2. Subnetworking, static routing, DHCP, DNS and NAT. Use of aforementioned technologies is a laboratory environment.  Virtual Local Area Networks (VLAN) and Virtual Private Networks (VPN)
3. Implementing a ready-made network topology in practice.  Planning a network topology.
4. Studying the network performance with standard tools in various setups. Usage of a protocol analyzer (Wireshark).  Improving and optimizing network performance.
5. Practice and usage of application and transport layer protocols.  Understanding HTTP and FTP. Differences of TCP and UDP.  SMTP, POP3, HTTPS

Instructions for students on how to achieve the learning outcomes

For each laboratory exercise, there is material available for self-study in Moodle. The pre-lab task to be completed in Moodle supports the completion of the hands-on laboratory session. After the laboratory session, a post-lab task is available in Moodle to gauge what was learned.

Assessment scale:
