Urban Planning and Design IV

Additional information

The topic of the course is regional and strategic planning. The course provides skills in both practical planning work as well as in research and development. The course is comprised of a comprehensive planning task, an integrated GIS-module, a lecture series, which introduces the trends of urban planning, planning and analysing tools and the theory of regional change, and a home exam.

Learning Outcomes

After completing the course, the student is able to: -recognise the theories, which explain the regional urban processes as well as the spatial regional models -understand that city is a complex and self-organizing system -understand the possibilities, effectiveness and limits of planning in the complex environment -know the history of general master planning and the development needs of the Finnish planning system -analyze and interpret the spatial and functional characteristics and the interaction between them in a city region with methods of different kind, including GIS and qualitative analyses -find and form relevant research and planning questions based on analyses, form valid operation models based on research and political choices and plans based on these -visualize plans and the ideas and information behind them -outline future visions and at the same time realize the unpredictability of the future
