Description:

The idea of the course is to introduce and develop expertise in the use of a software defined radio platform called LabVIEW/USRP. It can be used for creating and processing communication signals in real-time. This environment is widely used in physical layer communication system development (e.g. for the future 5G wireless system) by research organizations and companies. Experience about these tools could be quite valuable for your future career! The basic task is to develop models for different elements of a digital communication link and eventually experiment with a complete real-time communication link. There will be 16 learning sessions of about 90 minutes. These will be on selected Tuesdays and Wednesdays in Periods 3 and 4, starting on February 9th. During Period, there will be some additional sessions also on Thursdays at the same time. The learning sessions will take place in the PC classroom TC331. The requirements for 3 cr from the course include active participation in the learning sessions and completing the exercise tasks at basic level. The nominal workload is 32 hours of learning sessions and 48 hours of independent work. Additional credits (up to 6 cr from the course) can be obtained by doing additional exercises. Background requirements: ELT-41306 Communication Theory (or equivalent). The theory behind the exercises is presented in courses ELT-43006 Digital Transmission and ELT-43106 Multicarrier and Multiantenna Techniques. This LabVIEW/USRP exercises can be done in parallel with those courses, but with some extra effort from the student, also independently of those. The needed background knowledge is presented in a compact, practically oriented way during the learning sessions. Course organizer: prof. Markku Renfors, markku.renfors@tut.fi, room TG309 Teacher: Sudharsan Srinivasan, sudharsan.srinivasan@tut.fi First lecture will be on 09.02.2016 in TC331 Welcome!

Note: In addition to the LabVIEW/USRP exercises, the Special Assignment can be done also an individual tailored exercise, typically literature study combined with some Matlab modeling and simulations.
