Requirements

This course is completed by collecting points homework assignments and either simulation or design project. There is no exam. Neither of the projects are compulsory. There will be great flexilibity for the students to optimize their work load with respect to the target grade. Details will be provided in the opening lecture.
Completion parts must belong to the same implementation

Learning Outcomes

After passing the course, students know how to design, implement and characterize passive two-port and multi-port microwave transmission line components. They know how to summarize the relevant design details and performance data in a concise and cohesively composed technical report and how to communicate the relevant engineering concepts to others.

Content

Content Core content Complementary knowledge Specialist knowledge
1. Microwave circuit theory focused on signal transmission in microstrip transmission lines.  Co-planar transmission line technology. Two-transmission lines method for the measurement of dielectric constant.  Analysis of power flow and transfer of current and voltage in multi-port networks.
2. Operation princples of passive microwave components: power dividers, hybrids, couplers, impedance tuners, filters,...  Commonly used modifications to the basic configurations.  Trends in the current technology.
3. Building and testing passive microwave components: power dividers, hybrids, couplers, filters,...  Modern simulation software.  Understanding the impact of uncertainties in implementation and practical limitations to the electromagnetic performance.
4. Communications skills: composing a technical report and giving feedback to peers.  Communication of technical matters and abstract ideas to your peers in homework solutions sessions.
