Learning Outcomes

After passing the course the student can • Evaluate the irradiance of a scene and calculate the signal to noise ratio in the detection of an image or a light signal. • Explain the physical and technical characteristics of filters, optical fibers, light sources and detectors available in the market. • Calculate the maximum permissible exposure (eye and skin) laser radiation in accordance with IEC 60825-1. Calculate the minimum distance of eye damage to laser radiation in accordance with IEC 60825-1, under assisted and non-assisted observation. Specify safety glasses in accordance with IEC 60825-1. • Explain the different optical properties of biological tissues; on the mechanisms of interaction of light with biological tissues; and on the major medical applications of lasers and fiber optics. • Explain the different biomedical photonic techniques and its applications in medicine and biology.
