Lecture times and places: Tuesday 9 - 11 RM205 , Thursday 10 - 12 RM205

Requirements

The course consists of lectures, exercises and course works. There are three mandatory exercises in the course. Exercise 1 deal with stability calculations, and exercise 2 with settlement calculations for the same case. Exercise 3 consists of the geotechnical design of a supported excavation. The exercises must be completed before the (compulsory) exam.
Completion parts must belong to the same implementation

Learning Outcomes

After completing the course the student can; 1) List the most important factors influencing slope stability 2) Do slope stability analysis with a calculation program and evaluate the result 3) List different settlement calculation methods and evaluate their suitability 4) Calculate settlement with calculation program and evaluate the results 5) Explain the relationship between earth pressure and displacements 6) Calculate stresses and deformations on a retaining wall with a calculation program and evaluate the results.

Content

Content Core content Complementary knowledge Specialist knowledge
1. Settlement calculations; Different material models, consolidation, loads in 2D and 3D geometries, time behavior of settlement and pore pressure.
2. Stability calculations; limit equilibrium methods, drained and undrained strength, pore pressure in stability analysis, application of safety.
3. Retaining wall design; Actions, effects of actions, displacements, earth pressure, material models, wall types.
