Learning Outcomes

This course provides the students a basic understanding how health care systems are organised and funded in Finland and in other countries. It is useful for students who are planning to work in health care domain, especially in health informatics. After this course, student can: - Define what is health, health care and healthcare system. - Knows the history and status of health care systems in Finland, EU and globally. - Understand and can describe health care organization and funding in Finland and describe typical variations in OECD countries - Understand and describe typical health care processes and their management. - Understands the role of health information systems in the processes of care, in the service integration, and in the evaluation of effectiveness/efficacy.

1. Terminology and concepts: health, health care, health care system, health care process, health care management, health outcomes  History of health care systems in Finland and in other countries.   
2. Health care organisation and funding systems.  Variations in health care organisation and funding in different countries. Relationship between funding, organisation, health outcomes and costs. Prevention / health management, primary care, secondary care, tertiary care   
3. Health care processes.   Operations management, Lean, demand-supply, efficacy, efficiency   
4. Role of technology and information systems in the processes of care, in service integration. Health care process evaluation.     

Instructions for students on how to achieve the learning outcomes

Active participation is required to pass the course (80%). Exam will define the grade.

Numerical evaluation scale (1-5) will be used on the course

Partial passing:
