Linna building on the city centre campus is being developed with the University of Tampere Foundation
Completed in 2006, the Linna building currently houses the university Library, the Faculty of Social Sciences’ units, and on-site faculty services. As a result of the renovation, the building will also accommodate the Finnish Social Science Data Archive (FSD), which will move from the Virta building, and faculty staff currently located in the Pinni B and Päätalo buildings.
The project, prepared in collaboration with the building’s users, aims to renew the Linna facilities and their use according to the objectives and constraints of the university’s Facilities Programme. The renovations are targeted at work, learning and special facilities as well as the Library’s service areas. Workspaces will be created based on the needs identified in the planning of the project. With the Library's workspaces concentrated on the first floor, the customer areas on the same floor will also be developed. Other customer areas will remain unchanged. The project will also create new spaces for those research activities of the Faculty of Social Sciences that will move into the building and update the student association spaces and teaching facilities.
The project has been prepared and will be carried out in close cooperation with the property owner, the University of Tampere Foundation.
The Linna project is part of the broader university Facilities Programme that also includes the renovation of Pinni B and Päätalo on the city centre campus and stopping to use the Pinni A and Virta buildings. The decisions made in May allow construction to begin after the completion of the tendering process in August and to continue to the end of the year. In connection with the development of the Linna building, the current lease will be extended until 2044.
Kaija Holli, Chair of the Board of the University of Tampere Foundation, looks forward to the upcoming construction project:
"As a support foundation, our core mission is to support the university’s research and activities. Functional spaces are an important resource for the university, and the renovations will improve the efficiency and versatility of the facilities, advancing the university’s strategic goals. As the property owner, we want to be involved in developing the Linna building to meet user needs. We thank all parties for their excellent cooperation in preparing the project."
“From the perspective of campus development, it is significant that we get to develop this building, which is important especially for the Faculty of Social Sciences and the Library and accords with the goals of the Facilities Programme. The year-long project planning and co-development process has progressed well in collaboration with our expert partners, Helamaa & Heiskanen Architects and A-Insinöörit. We want to thank not only the users and experts but also the University of Tampere Foundation for their efficient cooperation in both the project preparation and the upcoming implementation," say Pertti Iso-Mustajärvi and Satu Hyökki from the University’s facilities management.
