Industrial management theme area

We develop sustainable and value-adding competences, innovations, operating models and solutions that support the digital and green transitions in the industrial and built environment sectors.

Objectives

The objective of the theme of Industrial Management is to develop products, processes, systems, business operations and management of industrial production and construction so that technical, economic, ecological and social perspectives are considered in a balanced manner.

We focus especially on the development of the supply chain, logistics, accounting, marketing, quality, risks, technology and personnel management of production operations. Production processes include planning, control and optimisation, and continuous improvement in value creation.

A responsible product project is cost- and resource-efficient and managed professionally. The life cycle of products is considered in the design, manufacture, use and disposal of the product.

Focus areas of RDIC activities

  • Sustainable manufacturing: We promote Industry 4.0 digital design and manufacturing technologies such as automation, robotics and 3D printing. Our activities are part of the national SIX initiative.

  • Sustainable construction: We study the circular economy business of the built environment, the use of low-carbon building materials in the built environment, the energy efficiency of building services technology and the transition to renewable forms of energy in buildings.

Applied research infrastructures

FieldLab

FieldLab is an RDIC environment and experimental platform for digital and sustainable design and manufacturing, where modern design and manufacturing methods are studied and piloted. It answers the practical questions of the dual shift in production and includes Industry 4.0 capabilities and the equipment base of the manufacturing industry connected so that data collection, analysis and visualisations are possible.

Construction Laboratory

The Construction Laboratory conducts research in areas such as concrete technology, measurement technology and 3D scanning, as well as building services and building automation.

Key projects

KIRA CIRCULARIS (2024–2026)

In the project, six Finnish universities of applied sciences will open their research and laboratory environments to promote the circular economy of SMEs. The project will create a new kind of ecosystem that supports the circular economy of construction companies. The cooperation's main goal is to bring new products, services and innovations to the market in the built environment. The project is part of the KIRA growth programme.

Designing of Circular Economy in Refurbishment Projects (2023–2025)

The project develops circular economy procedures for the planning process of renovation projects. Currently, there are various research projects on which building elements can be dismantled and recycled, but there is a gap in the economics of circular economy solutions. This development project promotes the creation of a well-functioning market for circular economy services in renovation.

SIE - Sustainable Industry Ecosystem (2021–2022)

In the project, research organisations support the ongoing digital transformation of Finnish industry towards an economically, ecologically and socially sustainable industry by combining research spearheads in circular economy, robotics, industrial technology, energy production, innovative digital solutions and artificial intelligence. In the project, TAMK is responsible for the pilot line of Industry 4.0 and the 3D printing of biocomposite materials with a robot.

Impact of our projects

Sustainable Development Goals

In particular, we promote the following UN Sustainable Development Goals

  • Goal 8: Promote sustained, inclusive and sustainable economic growth, full and productive employment and decent work for all
  • Goal 9: Build resilient infrastructure, promote inclusive and sustainable industrialization and foster innovation
  • Goal 11: Make cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable
  • Goal 12: Ensure sustainable consumption and production patterns
  • Goal 13: Take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts
  • Goal 17: Strengthen the means of implementation and revitalize the Global Partnership for Sustainable Development
