Children and Parenthood in the Shadow of Prison – Support and Services for Prisoner’s Families

Tampere University
Duration of project1.9.2024–31.12.2026

The project explores parental incarceration from different perspectives focusing on children and parenthood, and on developing research-based services for the families in the shadow of prison. Despite a growing body of research pointing to the complex problems children of incarcerated parents may face, we still know too little about parental incarceration and how to best support these vulnerable children and families.

The project expands the understanding of parental incarceration and its impact both in Finland as well as globally. As the forms of families, conceptual understandings of family relations and sociopolitical environments vary, the variations may cause different consequences for the children and their families in different societies.
